Brian Jackson (James McAvoy), a working- class youth from Essex, gets a chance to prove himself when he is accepted to Bristol University.  Brian becomes smitten with his beautiful University Challenge teammate Alice Eve (Alice Harbinson) and attempts to woo her into his arms her with his formidable advanced general knowledge skills. He carelessly manages to hurt the feelings of Rebecca Epstein (Rebecca Hall), a friend whose politics and wit he admires.
